Dinner Meeting September 12, 2019 - What is Wrong With My Concrete

Sep 12, 2019

Subject: What Is Wrong with My Concrete?  Using Concrete Petrography to Determine Cause & Extent of Concrete Deterioration (1 PDH)
Speaker: (Bill) William J. Lyons III, FACI

Concrete petrography is a useful tool for understanding the performance of concrete and other cement-based construction materials. It can also be a poorly understood exercise that is more frustrating than rewarding for report recipients. The presentation will highlight the basics of concrete petrography and show how it can become part of a broad tool kit in troubleshooting and repairing concrete.

This session will focus primarily on topics relevant to concrete suppliers, contractors and designers --specifically materials, QA/QC, cracking, dusting, low strength, and air distribution. Other topics such as scaling, freeze-thaw damage, and alkali-silica reaction are also fair game.

Using the information gleaned from a petrographic examination of concrete or concrete materials, a repair plan can be devised and implemented using industry standard consensus methods and support documents.
